As February rolls around each year, BIS celebrates Kindness is Contagious week where being kind with words and actions takes center stage. This morning, we watched the Tuesday PBS video posted by the fifth grade teachers. The theme was "Kindness is Contagious" and the video was called, "Pay it Forward." As the video unfolds, a construction worker helps a boy who falls off his skateboard. In turn the boy helps carry groceries for an elderly lady. She in turn offers a coin to a young woman struggling to pay the parking meter. This continues through several people going about their daily business. Each person encounters someone who lends them a helping hand and in turn they pass the kindness on to another stranger on the street until at the end, a waitress hands the now sweaty construction worker a cool glass of water. Kindness comes full circle.
This video sparked a wonderful, enlightening conversation in our classroom. When asked if any of the class had ever experienced "paying it forward," hands shot up all around the room. Just about everyone had a story to tell about how his/her family had helped a stranger in need or rescued an animal or friend. This sharing went on and on. You could have heard a pin drop except when hands went up begging to share. What we discovered: We come from caring families where sharing with even complete strangers is done without hesitation. What an example you parents are to your children! We heard stories of handing out money, McDonald's hamburgers, a burrito, a banana, water bottles, groceries, and gift cards to people in Springfield who stand with signs. We heard of parents offering to pay for a tank of gas for a young woman asking for money. We heard about a father driving to Springfield to rescue a family whose van broke down leaving them stranded. Someone shared about taking care of a stray animal that came to her house. Someone shared how he felt when a stranger paid for his family's ice cream at Dairy Queen. Another shared of strangers paying for his family's dinner at a McDonald's drive-thru. Someone shared of seeing a man in a wheelchair asking for money later to get out of the chair and walk to his car. This did not discourage the class. They decided that it was more important to share even if someone abused a kindness. Truth: Your children know what it means to share. They know what it means to give expecting nothing in return. They know what it means to think of others besides themselves. These lessons are priceless. Long after academic goals have been met, championship games have been won, driving has been conquered, prom dresses have been bought, and high school diplomas are awarded, this core value--kindness-- along with many other values observed and cultivated are what your children will be taking with them as they are launched into the world Well done, parents! |
