Mrs. Endres’ Classroom Information
Welcome to Room 314! I am excited to be chosen as your child’s third grade teacher. Being a mother of four children, I understand how important it is for you to feel good about the person who is responsible for your child’s education and welfare during the school day. Please know that I take that responsibility seriously, and I pledge to treat your child as if he/she were my own. You will find that teaching/modeling positive character traits is a big priority for me as a parent and teacher. Developing good work habits, using self-control, being polite and courteous, working cooperatively with others, and being sensitive of others’ needs will be focused on. I want all my children to be successful not only this year in third grade but throughout their lifetime.
Communication
Daily –You can contact me through email at [email protected] or call me at school (777-5160) or at home (326-7631). I do not have caller I.D. or an answering machine so if I don’t pick-up it means I am not at home. Please try again. If you want to send me a written note, I collect notes from home first thing in the morning. I will do my best to respond by the end of the day.
Monthly - A monthly newsletter will be loaded on the class blog at [email protected] to celebrate student achievement, inform you of what we are studying, and highlight important events coming up.
Mid-quarter - Progress reports concerning grades and classroom objectives will be sent home in the middle of each quarter. This will help you monitor the level of your student’s performance before final grades are given at the end of the quarter.
Quarterly –Report cards will be issued at the end of each quarter. The report card for the first quarter will be handed to you at parent-teacher conferences.
Homework
Third grade is a big year! The level of difficulty academically and the responsibility required to complete more independent tasks can seem like a huge leap to some students instead of a small jump.
Incomplete Assignments: Most students will be able to complete classroom assignments during the time allotted while others will need additional time at home to get them completed. If a student does not complete a class assignment, it needs to be taken home for homework. That piece becomes top priority. Your child will be responsible to bring the assignment home, complete it, and turn it in the next morning in the appropriate tray. It will not be considered late because it became a homework assignment that was due the next day.
Homework Reading Log: At the beginning of each month, a homework reading log will be sent home. Students are required to read 25 minutes at home Monday through Thursday. If a night is missed, it may be made up over the weekend. The goal is for students to practice reading 100 minutes each week. It is important for students to turn in the homework reading log at the end of the month. Our class will participate in the Pizza Hut Book It program and your child will be rewarded with a free personal pan pizza.
Students may read orally to an adult or sibling, or silently read to themselves. If you have a reluctant reader, I ask that you read with your child. You may want to read one paragraph and let him/her read the next and so on. This will help hold his interest. For students struggling with reading, you read to your child. Let him/her experience the joy of words while they make a “mind movie.” In time, move to them reading aloud to you out of books at their level or with familiar text. The purpose of reading at night is to give students additional practice and to learn to enjoy the quiet, thinking time. It teaches kids that there is more to life than television and entertainment. It’s a great habit to begin.
In a nutshell, homework will consist of completing any assignments that were not finished during the day and reading for 25 minutes four nights a week.
Discipline
I will follow the district policy regarding discipline as outlined in the BIS Student Handbook. My goal is to maintain a positive classroom environment that enables students to have fun while working to meet their goals. My discipline practice tends to focus on the positive which reinforces my expectations. Students will have consequences when they choose to ignore the rules. Students who make positive choices will earn rewards. I will do my best to stay in contact with you regarding discipline issues. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Book Orders
Students will have an opportunity each month to order books from Scholastic Lucky Book Club. Not only will your child enjoy owning his/her favorite books, but the class will earn points to buy books for our classroom library. Buying books is not mandatory—it’s just an opportunity. If you do choose to purchase books from this company, please write checks payable to Scholastic.
Birthday Celebrations
Children love to celebrate their birthdays! You are welcome to send treats on or near your child’s birthday. You may consider celebrating your child’s half birthday if he/she has a summer birthday. The school asks that edible treats be purchased baked goods/healthy snacks instead of homemade treats. Birthday treats will be served in the classroom.
Special Class Schedule
Monday - P.E.
Tuesday - Computer Lab
Wednesday - Music
Thursday - Art
Friday – Library/Counselor
*Please don’t forget to wear tennis shoes on Monday.
Suggestion
To familiarize yourself with BIS, please take the time to read through the BIS Student Handbook to review school policy on a variety of issues. Two areas of high importance are the discipline policy and homework policy.
